Il libro, che funge anche da catalogo alla mostra di New York e Eugene, è il primo a trattare in modo completo il ciclo di arazzi dedicato alla Vita di Cristo. Gli arazzi furono commissionati dal cardinal Francesco Barberini, nipote di Urbano VIII, e costituiscono uno dei grandi “monumenti” della Roma barocca. L’attenta lettura che ne fa James Harper li situa nel contesto stilistico del Barocco maturo e in quello della propaganda politica e sociale del loro committente. Il primo capitolo introduce la Roma di papa Urbano VIII. I capitoli successivi ricostruiscono la storia della manifattura privata del cardinale Barberini e l’attività di Giovanni Francesco Romanelli (Viterbo, 1610-1662), che disegnò i cartoni per gli arazzi. Basandosi sui documenti dell’epoca, l’autore ricostruisce i modi in cui il ciclo di arazzi veniva utilizzato dai Barberini tracciando così una vera e propria storia del gusto. Il capitolo successivo segue lo spostamento degli arazzi negli Stati Uniti e il seguente trasferimento nella cattedrale di St. John the Divine, sullo sfondo della storia del collezionismo della gilded age. Infine, Marlene Eidelheit discute gli aspetti tecnici degli arazzi e il lungo lavoro di restauro che ha preceduto mostra e libro.
